As Pacen and I were getting ready to go pick up Grandma Reba and Grandpa Greg from the airport, Pacen got up onto the counter and took 2 doses of Merik's rx medication (oxybutinin for over active bladder) that I had drawn up and ready to take with us so Merik wouldn't miss his afternoon meds. He did it so quickly, I had zero time to even react! I quickly googled 'oxybutinin overdose' .. All of the information said to immediately call poison control, so I gave poison control a ring and chatted with the nurse. The medication can make blood pressure decrease and increase seizure risk in epileptic patients. Oh great. Poison control nurse said to go right to the hospital and she called the hospital to tell them we were on our way.
If Pace was a healthy child, it would have only made him sleepy and have a dry mouth and we could have monitored him at home.
We got to St Louis Children's, got our Ebola virus screening and were taken right back for monitoring. His was lethargic, had a high heart rate and low blood. He was hooked up to the heart monitor, pressure cuff, pulse ox and an iv started.
After a couple hours of observation and the medication hitting the peak and then fizzling down, his blood pressure started to stabilizes and he perked up and was then in a really great mood. He did end up with a couple hives, but neither the nurse or doctor through they were related to the oxybutinin, and more so stress.
Friday we had his ENT appt at St Louis Children's. Pacen passed his hearing test, even though the Dr thought he talked really loud. He was right on track, despite all of the ear infections he had in the last 6 mo. Dr. M wants to wait until Pacen gets his sleep study done before we go right for tubes. He meets the ear infection criteria for more than 3 infections in 6 mo, but since he's such a restless, thrashing around, noisy breathing sleeper, she wants to make sure he doesn't have apnea first. If he's got obstructive apnea, she wants to remove his tonsils/adenoids at the same time. As we both raved about his 6 weeks of health, we are holding off until on tubes until the sleep study is completed or he gets another ear infection.
Not even kidding, after being excited about his 6 healthy infection-free weeks, Friday night he was up several times with a dry cough, congestion and miserable as ever. He has his 3 year old well baby appt 24 Oct, so we will have the ears checked then unless he gets worse beforehand.
