0800 rehab: Pacen had 3 ritz crackers, 5 bites of ham, a couple apple cinnamon veggie straws and apple juice. He gagged on a bite of waffle before rehab, and gagged by touching the ham in rehab. He did well, but he has a lot of improvement to show! He also did a little core strength with the swing in the therapy room. It looks almost like a little hot air balloon basket suspended from the ceiling, I will have to get a pic of it! The last 3 months of appts he didn't like the sensation of swinging, but today he did well and sat in it for a couple minutes and tossed bean bag animals out of the basket.
0945 Neuro: We scheduled a follow
Up appt from our EEG that was in October. The EEG was normal per the reading, but there were spikes in his patterns that resembles seizure like activity. Pacen saw a PA named Susan Mikulec and she was awesome. She was so helpful to explain what all the EEG meant, and that he can still be having seizures even if the EEG says he isn't at that time. Pacen did have a few little seizures in the last 5 weeks and a seizure Saturday morning where we found him just laying on the floor zoned out and white as a sheet. We don't know how long he was like that, but Levi picked him up and poor Pace looked so confused. It was a similar seizure to what he did in Augsut. She wants to increase his keppra dosage to 4.5 ML twice daily instead of 4 ML twice daily and see if he can go a month without any seizures on that dosage and then go from there. She also wants to get another MRI scheduled to see if anything has changed since the MRI he had in May 2012. Susan watched how he walked and ran as well, since he tucks his left arm up like a chicken wing when he walks/runs. She didn't really say anything about it, but she wrote it in his folder.
We raced back to the Carrie Tingley Hospital and were just in time for our 1130 rehab appt.
Pacen tried 1 bite of cottage cheese and then gagged and spit the 2nd bite. He touched a dried apricot to his mouth , but wouldn't take a bite. Pacen always does well with tuna salad, he ate about 1/4 can of tuna with a little mayo mixed in. He crumbled ritz crackers all over the floor, and dipped 3 veggie straws in cream cheese. He didn't want anything to eat, he was really uncooperative. I think he was only taking bites to go through the motions of it to be done. We served him some olives too, and he wouldn't even touch them. Valerie (occupational therapy) says that he doesn't feel the hunger feeling when you get hungry or how to process it. It was slightly unsuccessful of an appt.
We returned 2 hours later for his 'snack session'
200pm snack session: Pace did well for snack. He tried the olives but spit them all back out, he dipped 4 veggie straws in cream cheese and had some more tuna salad from lunch. He only gagged once on the olives, but was otherwise cooperative! It was his best session of the day. Now time for a much needed second nap!
