He didn't show any aspiration during the study, and only showed reflux. He did SO well, and even took bites of the barium applesauce and chocolate pudding!
The reason the feeding clinic wanted him to have the swallow study, is because after he drinks, he will have bright red lower eyelids, blotchy face, wet voice, cough and doesn't have an awesome liquid intake. He needs 36oz of liquid each day, but we usually can only get an average of 16 oz between formula and juice/water.
Since nothing showed during the 7 bites of barium and 5 sips of liquid with barium he took, they said he is not aspirating. 5 minutes after the test he ran his normal red eyelids, blotchy face and coughing. The speech pathologist said he has clinical aspiration signs, although he is doing it 5 minutes after drinking and eating, but during, but didn't know if he was aspirating his reflux because they only had the fluoroscopy running for a total of 3 minutes after his swallow study. (Even after I explained to them in great detail that his episodes start after he eats, and the speech pathologist did witness them during the consult afterwards) She recommends that Pacen see a pulmonologist for possible apnea (that stemmed from her questionnaire before the swallow study) He had one episode of reflux that lasted 10 seconds in the bottom 1/3 of his esophagus that was bulging. He has been on reflux medication for quite awhile, so I expected the reflux to happen.
We are exhausted from the day, getting up at 4am go get on the road by 530... Good night!
Tomorrow he has two feeding rehab sessions, I will get more info on the swallow study there.
