We had Pacen's allergy appt with the allergist on base . All I have to say is thank god she's a civilian and she cares <3 she was fabulous and played peekaboo with Pacen the whole time while we talked. Based off of his clinical presentation she has diagnosed him with eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) and we will be awaiting scopes in a couple months when we can get into the GI at St. Louis Children's so the GI can order his/her list of things/biopsies. She was really surprised they he's never been scoped before at all but is concerned the EE isn't just strictly in his esophagus, and that it could be throughout his digestive tract since he gets such horrible bloating and pain. What a relief that she's already got her plan for Pacen. Since he's already 90% elemental with formula, and taking Prevacid and Zantac for reflux, that is essentially the management of EE in a nutshell, and there are a few other trials we can do, but he's too little to swallow the inhaled version of steroids to coat his throat. She also ordered blood work to check the IgE levels for food allergies for his blood and see if any are improved from where we started. The speech pathologist from the feeding team called me to reschedule our initial evaluation so that the entire team can be there and possibly repeat a swallow study the same day. The appt is 13May now! A week earlier than the original one.
Eventful day! Phew.
